Jonas Koivula is the first Finnish Champion of Angry Birds

Over the last three weeks, Angry Birds fans in Finland had the chance to participate in the Finnish Championships organized by Rovio and Nokia. 2600 people across the country participated in local qualifiers, where players tried to reach the highest score on a set of levels. Last weekend, 32 finalists faced off in head to head matches to settle the winner.

In the final match, 19-year-old Jonas Koivula emerged as the first Finnish champion of Angry Birds. For his victory, Jonas received a brand new N8 smartphone, courtesy of Nokia. With Angry Birds Rio soon available for Nokia, and Rio the movie launching in theaters in April, Jonas also wins a trip for two to Hollywood, Los Angeles, CA and a visit to Fox studios.

“I’ve been studying hard for school for the last months, and playing Angry Birds has been a great way of relaxing,” says Jonas. “I participated in the competition just to try my luck, and was a bit surprised to reach the finals. It feels amazing to have won, it was really exciting to play against all these tough opponents! Prizes were also great, and I will travel to Hollywood together with my girlfriend, who also loves the game.”

For more information about the competition in Finland, check the Nokia NSeries Blog.

More Angry Birds Championships are being rolled out in the Nordic countries already, and more events will follow globally. Keep up with Rovio News for more information on how to participate in your local competitions and win great prizes!

Watch the Super Bowl XLV, and keep your eyes peeled during the fourth quarter: spot the Rio commercial and you might see a little something to find something special in Angry Birds!

Angry Birds Rio will be available in March!

SMS payment coming to Android devices
We are bringing Angry Birds players on Android the option of purchasing the Mighty Eagle and other cool new content in the future using our brand new payment system, Bad Piggy Bank!

Bad Piggy Bank purchases will be paid through operator billing. No credit card is required, you simply select the content you want to purchase in the game, and select the Bad Piggy Bank icon. You confirm your purchase, the payment is made via SMS, and you will be charged in your phone bill.

Update: Bad Piggy Bank Facts

Last week, we issued update 1.5.1 for Angry Birds Android. In addition to regular updates, we were preparing to take the Bad Piggy Bank payment system into use.

To set the record straight, here's the facts on the Bad Piggy Bank:

The Android version of Angry Birds asked for SMS permission because this mobile payment capability was added in version 1.5.1.

The functionality was mistakenly activated in the released update - Bad Piggy Bank support will only be released through various operators globally later during 2011.

We have since disabled the functionality in the 1.5.1.1 update until further notice, and we will activate it when Bad Piggy Bank becomes available.

Angry Birds will not use the SMS functionality of the device for any other purpose than Bad Piggy Bank payments.

If the Bad Piggy Bank is not available for your operator, no purchases can be made, and you cannot be charged for anything.

Right now, the system will be available only in Finland for Elisa customers, with more countries and carriers following later.

We are working globally with operators on bringing Bad Piggy Bank to all of our users worldwide - ask your mobile carrier or operator for more details!

Expect the Mighty Eagle on Angry Birds Android later this year!

Angry Birds Rio for Android to Debut Exclusively in the Amazon Appstore
AUSTIN, Texas/ ESPOO, Finland – March 14, 2011 – Rovio today announced that the highly anticipated game Angry Birds Rio will be introduced for the Android platform exclusively in the Amazon Appstore.

Developed in conjunction with Twentieth Century Fox, Angry Birds Rio features the animated stars of the studio’s upcoming motion picture, RIO. Additionally, for the first time ever on the Android platform, fans of Angry Birds games will have the opportunity to purchase and download ad-free versions of Angry Birds and Angry Birds Seasons. Both will debut only in the Amazon Appstore.

“The Android platform has seen phenomenal growth, and it’s great that new avenues for app distribution are opening up,” said Mikael Hed, CEO of Rovio. “The openness of the Android platform works for the benefit of consumers and developers alike. It has been delightful to team up with Amazon to bring the Angry Birds franchise to this great new application marketplace.”

“Amazon is thrilled to work with a leading developer like Rovio in offering our customers Angry Birds Rio for Android exclusively in the Amazon Appstore,” said Aaron Rubenson, category leader for Amazon Appstore. “We think Angry Birds Rio is sure to be an instant customer favorite.”

“Angry Birds Rio is a fun and interactive way to introduce millions of fans to the exciting world of 'RIO,' and we are proud to work with both Rovio and Amazon to make this experience available to users on the Android platform,” said Peter Levinsohn, president of new media and digital distribution for Twentieth Century Fox. “The Amazon Appstore will be a great new way for consumers to download all their favorite Android apps, and we’re excited to offer Angry Birds Rio as one of the first pieces of content to be made available to consumers through this new store.”

In Angry Birds Rio, the original Angry Birds are kidnapped and taken to the magical city of Rio, where they eventually escape their captors and set out to save their friends, Blu and Jewel – two rare macaws and the stars of the upcoming Fox motion picture, RIO. From the creators of Fox’s blockbuster ICE AGE motion picture franchise, RIO debuts in theaters worldwide on April 15, 2011. Angry Birds Rio will launch with 60 dedicated levels, with more content to follow via app updates.
